ON SAINT BENEDICT

BISHOP OF ISERNIA IN ITALY.

[Commentary]

Benedict, Bishop of Isernia in Italy (S.)

G. H.

Isernia a city of Samnium ancient and Episcopal,
under the Metropolis of Capua, not far from the Volturno
river, between Bojano and Venafro situated is.
Of this See the Bishops recounting Ferdinand
Ughelli volume 6 of Italia Sacra, [Eulogy from Ughelli,] thus of the first Bishop of Isernia
S. Benedict writes: The time in which he flourished, the country,
and acts are unknown: the body under the high altar of the Cathedral Church laid religiously is venerated: the feast day at Isernia
is celebrated on IV May. Of him mentions Ferrarius in
the Catalogue of the Saints of Italy and Paolo Regio, who
narrates the Cathedral Church, as by a sudden and vehement
earthquake shaken, to have trembled, when
a certain Bishop of Isernia about S. Benedict's
body to be dug commanded. These things Ughelli. Adds Ferrarius,
a lamp always before the body kindled. John Vincent
Ciarlanti of the Cathedral Church of Isernia the Archpresbyter, [to Ferrarius]
book 3 of the historic Memory of Samnium chapter 8 these things about this
Bishop has: The Church of Isernia at the same time S. Benedict ruled, in which the Nolan S. Paulinus, [and to Ciarlanti.]
and were both partakers of the calamities, which
then happened. Is venerated S. Paulinus June 22, when of
the various to him brought persecutions it will be to be treated: to which like
seems S. Benedict to have suffered, since both the city Isernia is said
destroyed, and the inhabitants dispersed: whom S. Benedict to have gathered,
and the city to have restored is believed. Is added he was present
to the same S. Paulinus dying, Bassus and Antiochus the Consuls
in the year CCCCXXXI. But how long, returned to his Chair,
still he lived, not even by conjecture is indicated.
