## Commentary on Distinction XXXI.

#### *On relative names which are said of God commonly and eternally.*

### Part I.

#### *On the signification of these names.*

> *Furthermore, it must be considered, since the three persons are coequal among themselves* etc.

### Division of the text.

In the immediately preceding section the Master treated of relatives that are said of God properly and temporally. In this part he treats of those that are said of God commonly and eternally. And because these are appropriable, this part has two divisions. In the first he determines their signification; in the second their appropriation, at: *It must not be passed over here in silence* etc. The first part has two further divisions. In the first he determines the signification of this name *equal*; in the second of this name *like*, and this he does in the second chapter: *We say the same also of 'like' and 'likeness'*.

### Treatment of the questions.

For the understanding of this part there is a question concerning these names *like* and *equal*, and concerning these three things are asked.

First it is asked whether these names are said according to position, or according to privation.

Second it is asked whether they are said according to substance, or according to relation.

Third it is asked whether they express a mutual relation in the Father and the Son.
