# COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XVII.
## *On the production of Adam with respect to his constituent principles.*

*Concerning the origin of the soul many things are wont to be asked, etc.*

### DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

Above, the Master treated of the production of man in relation to the principle *from without*; in this part, however, he treats of his production with respect to his constituent principles, namely with respect to body and soul. Now this part is divided into two. In the first he determines concerning the production of the man; in the second concerning the production of the woman from the man, below: *In the same paradise also he formed the woman* etc., in distinction eighteen, at the beginning.

The first part has two [sections]. In the first he determines concerning the formation of man; in the second concerning the placing of the man already formed, at: *But the man having been thus formed* etc.

The first part has two [sections]. In the first he determines concerning the production of the soul in itself; in the second concerning [its production] in relation to the body, at: *But whether in the body, or outside the body* etc.

Now that part in which he determines concerning the production of the soul in itself has two [sections]. In the first he determines the truth; in the second he removes an error, at: *For certain heretics have supposed* etc.

Likewise that part in which he determines concerning the production of the soul in relation to the body has two [sections]. In the first he determines whether God created the soul in the body or outside the body. In the second he asks whether God made man at the perfect age, at: *It is also wont to be asked whether God [made] man all at once* etc.

Likewise that part in which he determines concerning the placing of [man] already formed has two [sections]. In the first he determines concerning his place in itself. In the second he determines [it] in comparison with its contents, at: *Moreover in this paradise there were trees* etc.

### TRACTATION OF QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of this part, a question arises here concerning the production of man with respect to two [things].

First, there is asked concerning the production of him insofar as it is on the part of the soul.

Second, insofar as it is on the part of the body.

Concerning the first, three [questions] are asked.

First, it is asked whether the soul of the first man was produced from the substance of God.

Second, it is asked whether it was produced from some matter.

Third, it is asked whether it was produced before the body, or after, or in the body, or outside.
