## COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION II.

### *On the Sacraments in particular.*

*Now let us approach the Sacraments of the new law.*

### DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

This is the second part, in which the Master treats of the Sacraments in particular. And this part has two parts. In the first it determines certain preliminaries. In the second it determines concerning each one individually, at: *After these things it must be seen what baptism is*, in the third distinction.

The first part has two parts. In the first part it determines the preliminaries to all the Sacraments, namely the time of institution and the number. In the second it determines the preliminary specially to baptism, at: *But now let us see concerning the Sacrament of baptism.*

The first part again has two [parts]. In the first it determines the number. In the second the time of institution, at: *But if it is asked why they were not* etc. — *But now concerning the Sacrament of baptism* etc. This is the second part, in which it treats of the preliminary to the baptism of Christ, which indeed was the baptism of John, and this part has three parts. In the first the Master determines concerning [its] usefulness, or to what end it was. In the second concerning its institution or naming, at: *But it is asked why it was called the baptism of John.* In the third it treats of [its] use or repetition, at: *Here it must be considered whether those baptized* etc.

### TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of the present distinction, according to the two things which the Master determines, two questions are principally asked.

First it is asked concerning the institution of the Sacraments, as to the first part.

But as to the second, inquiry is made concerning the baptism of John.

Concerning the first, three things are asked.

First it is asked whether every time was suitable for the institution of the Sacraments.

Second, whether in diverse times diverse [Sacraments] ought to have been instituted.

Third, whether in the time of grace one ought to have been instituted, or several.
