### COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XX.

#### Part I.

*On sacramental confession as regards the opportune time with respect to the penance of mortal [sins] in itself.*

> It must also be known that the time of penance lasts until the final moment, etc.

### DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

Above the Master treated of the necessity of confessing and of the power of the one absolving; this is the third part, in which he treats of the opportune time. And this part has two [sections]. In the first he treats of the opportune time as regards the penance of mortal [sins]. In the second, as regards the remission of venial [sins], in the following distinction, there: *It is also wont to be asked, whether after this life.*

The first part has two [sections]. In the first he treats of the opportune time with respect to penance in itself. In the second, in comparison to the power of the priest, there: *But if it be asked concerning him who [defers] the satisfaction enjoined,* etc. The first part has two [sections]. In the first he asks about the time for beginning penance; in the second about the [time] for ending penance itself, that is, satisfaction, there: *But if it be asked concerning those who in this life [do] penance,* etc. And in each part he first sets forth the truth, secondly confirms it by authority.

### TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of this part, concerning purgatorial punishment by reason of its penal character, six [things] are asked.

First it is asked, whether purgatorial punishment exists.

Second, whether it is the greatest of temporal punishments.

Third, whether it is voluntary.

Fourth, whether there is in it a greater certainty than in [this present] way.

Fifth, it is asked concerning those by whose ministry that punishment is inflicted.

Sixth and last it is asked concerning the place in which souls are purged.
