## Commentary on Distinction IV

### Part I. *On baptism in comparison to those receiving.*

*Here it must be said that some receive the Sacrament and the reality, etc.*

### Division of the text.

Above the Master has treated of baptism in itself. This is the second part, in which he treats of baptism in comparison to those receiving. And this part is divided into two parts. In the first he treats by comparison to those receiving in common. In the second specially with respect to little children, below in the last chapter: *It is also wont to be asked whether grace is given to little children in baptism* etc. The first part has two. In the first he treats of those receiving

the Sacrament. In the second of those receiving only the reality of the Sacrament, there: *There are also others, as we have set forth above, who receive the reality and not the Sacrament.* The first part has two. In the first he treats of those receiving the reality and the Sacrament. In the second he treats of those receiving only the Sacrament, there: *But those who approach without faith.* The first part has two. In the first he determines the truth. In the second he resolves a doubt or removes a falsity, there: *Although certain ones deny, to those* etc. Likewise the second part, in which he treats of those falsely approaching the Sacrament, has two. In the first he determines the truth. In the second he then removes a doubt, there: *Yet Augustine seems to say that to one falsely approaching* etc. And there he first determines a doubt arising from the authority of Augustine. Second he then determines a doubt that has its rise from the authority of the Apostle, there: *It is asked therefore how that is to be understood.*

### Treatment of the questions.

For the understanding of this part two things are principally asked.

First it is asked concerning those receiving the Sacrament of baptism worthily.

Second concerning those receiving falsely.

Concerning the first, three things are asked.

First it is asked whether baptism in those worthily receiving destroys all guilt.

Second, whether it destroys all penalty.

Third it is asked whether it has equal efficacy in all.
