## COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XLIII.

### *On the resurrection according to that which it is.*

*Lastly, concerning the condition of the resurrection and the manner of those rising*, etc.

### DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

The principal part of this book having been concluded, in which the Master determined concerning the health which the medicaments of the Sacraments confer, there follows the part in which he treats of the health to which the Sacraments dispose. The first is gratuitous health, the second is glorious; the first is of the way, the second of the fatherland; the first is from fault, the second from misery. And since resurrection concurs, and judgment concurs, to the having of this glory; therefore he first determines concerning the resurrection, and second concerning the judgment, below in the forty-seventh distinction: *It is also wont to be asked, in what manner the sentence of judgment will be given.*

The first part has two [members]. For since in the resurrection the separated soul is rejoined to the body, therefore he first treats of the resurrection, and second of the state of the separated soul, below in the forty-fifth distinction: *Moreover it must be known that all souls* etc. The first part has two [members]. In the first he determines concerning the resurrection, according to that which it is. In the second, as regards the manner, or as regards the quality and quiddity of those rising, below in the forty-fourth distinction: *But some are wont to inquire* etc.

The first part has two [members]. In the first he proceeds by way of narration. In the second by way of inquiry, there: *Here it is asked, whether the elect are then present* etc. — The first part has three parts. In the first part he shows that the resurrection will be. In the second he determines the cause of the resurrection, there: *For the cause of the resurrection of the dead* etc. In the third he determines the hour of the resurrection, there: *But at midnight he is said to be coming;* where it is said, that he says the resurrection will be *at midnight,* not on account of the quality of the time, but rather on account of the uncertainty of the hour.

*Here it is asked, whether the elect are then present* etc. This is the second part, in which the Master proceeds by way of inquiry, determining the doubtful matters which have their origin from the aforesaid; and those doubts are four, which have their origin from the words of the Apostle, which were touched upon before; and therefore this part has four particles and four chapters, in which it determines those doubts. In the first he asks concerning the opening of the books, and the things which are there read and the things which are recalled to memory. In the second he asks concerning the finding of the living, there: *It is also wont to be asked, whether those whom [we shall find] living* etc. In the third he determines how it is understood, that he will judge the living and the dead, there: *But to these it must be added.* In the fourth, how that is understood, that the dead will rise incorrupt, there: *And since from the aforesaid it may soundly be believed* etc.

### TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of the things which the Master determines, two things are principally asked concerning the present distinction.

First it is asked concerning the resurrection.

Second, concerning the opening of the books.

As regards the first, six things are asked.

First it is asked, whether the resurrection will be.

Second, granted that it will, it is asked, whether the resurrection is of all.

Third, granted that it is of all, it is asked, whether it is of all at once, or successively.

Fourth it is asked, whether the resurrection is of the same [bodies] according to number.

Fifth, whether the resurrection is natural, or miraculous.

Sixth it is asked, concerning the cause of our resurrection.
